Star fruit, also known as carambola (scientific name: Averrhoa carambola L.), is a plant of the genus Averrhoa in the family Oxalidaceae. It is a tree that can reach 12 meters in height and has many branches. The bark is dark gray and the inner bark is light yellow. The leaves are odd-pinnate, alternate, entire, ovate or elliptical. The flowers are small and slightly fragrant. Several or more flowers form a cyme or panicle, which grows from the axils of leaves or grows on the branches. The branches and buds are dark red. The berries are fleshy and drooping. The seeds are dark brown.
